Toucan Talk
From December 2017-2019, I worked with a team of four amazing people to build a messaging app for children. In today's world, the fact that our children are growing up around technology and social media is inescapable.
The aim is to provide an opportunity for kids to learn how to use a messaging app safely, with the guidance of their parents. Parents are able to moderate conversations and choose contacts for their children, which can include friends and family. We hope that this experience will prompt important conversations around privacy, data, and being kind online.
As the UX designer for this project, I built the complex user flows, visual design, and branding for this app.
Now available in the app store!

I created these UX wires to illustrate several main areas of the Toucan Talk app.
Messaging
Safe messaging was the key function of this app, allowing kids to connect with family and friends. We wanted to make sure the messaging was not text-first so that smaller children could intuitively use the app.
We did a round of user-testing with a group of kids to observe how they currently use phones. I observed that kids could use phones seamlessly, even without reading any of the text. They often relied on imagery and even used speech-to-text to help them navigate.
Parent Moderation
One of the most important aspects of this app is the ability for parents to safely moderate their children's activities. We added the ability for parents to review and save content being shared as well as the ability to "pause" messaging between contacts.
VISUAL DESIGN
I worked closely with another visual designer and developer to bring these wires to life. I did much of the visual design work with helpful feedback from the team.
